Elgg and International Education
I’m headed to the LIU Brooklyn campus next week to give a presentation to Friends World faculty and administration on building electronic learning portfolios using Elgg. I’ll also be running a podcasting workshop and taking part in discussions with administration and faculty on how to best integrate personal learning landscapes into the curriculum.
As Friends World is an international education program with centers in different countries, students will be able to use the main features of Elgg - weblogs, file repositories, and social networking , along with aggregation and tagging features - to bring a closer sense of community to a geographically dispersed student body. Students will now be able to incorporate photos, podcasts, and vidcasts into their portfolios much more easily than ever before. This will be a big change from the bound paper-based portfolios that have been the staple for portfolios until now. For online courses and focused discussions, we’ll use WebCT or Moodle, both of which integrate with Elgg.
Dave Tosh over at Curverider has been very helpful in setting up a demo site and answering my questions. I’m really looking forward to sharing Elgg with everyone in New York City and working through the nitty gritty issues of its implementation. And I can’t wait to see it all in action in September.
