Harnessing Collective Insight
Upon reading George Siemens latest post, I began wondering why more organizations don’t make greater efforts to promote informal learning amongst their members. Learners bring with them a whole wealth of previous knowledge and experience. In all educational settings, we miss out on the collective wisdom that arises through conversation, sharing, and discussion when we place learners in static hierarchical structures and deliver knowledge to them. There should be a place for delivery, and a place for exploration. Why do we so often insist on the former and leave the conversations to drinks over dinner? We should be promoting informal conversation in our organizations and institutions, harnessing the insights arising from those conversations, and making them available to all stakeholders.
