Personal Learning Communities
Personal Learning Communities (PLCs) arise when learners connect themselves with learning objects and human resources on the internet in such a way that the resulting network is centered around their personal interests. PLCs are greatly enhanced through personal webpublishing, especially through the use of weblogs, RSS technology, and various support applications. When cultivated in the classroom, students can combine their study of subject matter with personally tailored, real-world community interaction. Such authenticity and learner centeredness can tap into a student’s intrinsic motivation, resulting in a deeper, more personally meaningful learning experience. Ultimately, I believe that the formation of PLCs can lead to greater autonomy, self-direction, and process orientation in the learner - three individual attributes that, together, are essential for a more peaceful, balanced society.
