Sketch Crawl Kyoto

As part of his coursework this semester, one of our students at the East Asia Center, John Grillo, is organizing an intercultural artistic experience, called Sketch Crawl Kyoto, in which artists of varying nationalities roam the city of Kyoto making sketches of what impresses them, and then gather at the end of the day to share their work and discuss. In conjunction with the organization, planning, and execution of the event, John will also be carrying out a short qualitative study on participant experience, especially as relates to cultural differences in artistic perception between Japanese and foriegners.

What I love most about this learning activity is that it entirely self-directed and has blossomed from John’s personal interests in art, culture, language, and people. Furthermore, it connects his learning with a mutli-cultural community. What better way is there to learn than to do and reflect in an authentic setting? I can’t wait to read his course documentation for this independent study. Great work John!

Please visit John’s new weblog, Logical Explosion, and ask him tough questions. :-) —–
