BALL - Blog Assisted Language Learning

At the 2004 Kyoto JALT conference last weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting Jason Ward of the American University of Sharjah who gave an interesting presentation entitled, Alternative Assessment and the Rise of the Weblog, in which he shared with the audience his recent experience of having his EFL students use weblogs. He also just published a paper in the TEFL Web Journal entitled, Blog Assisted Language Learning (BALL): Push button publishing for the pupils, in which he presents the results of a survey he did with his students. It’s a worth a good look for any TEFL/TESL educators interested in using blogs with their students. I certainly wish Jason would start his own reflective blog.

This is the first I have heard of the term BALL. Maybe it is a fitting acronym, given that a ball is a universal instrument of play. Of course, we could get carried away and come up with more such names: WALL (Wiki), FALL (Furl), MALL (Moblog), all in the field of CALL (Computer). Any others?
