Learning Through Informal Conversation
I’ve been thinking lately about personally meaningful learning and the conditions that cause it to arise. When reflecting on my past experiences, I notice that almost all of the deepest learning experiences, the ones in which insights came about, took place in informal conversations with friends. This would generally happen late in the evening, sometimes early in the morning. There is something about the nature of informal conversation that relaxes our rigid mind, eases our fears of being publicly judged, and increases our receptivity to new perspectives, leading to insight. I wonder if there can ever be an official place in the curriculum at formal institutions of learning for late night conversation?
