The Musical Tastes of Aili
My daughter Aili, who turned 9 months this week, does her best to play music. So far, we’ve managed to collect five instruments for her: a bamboo flute, a drum, some windchimes, a pair of moraccos, and a glockenspiel. Her favorite instrument so far is the bamboo flute. When I play it, she sings along with wordless voice, sometimes to the correct pitch. When she just can’t stand listening to me play anymore, she crawls over and ungraciously yanks it out of my hand, attempting to play it herself by sticking the end of it in her mouth. She hasn’t figured out yet how to create sound by blowing into the mouthpiece with her lips sealed on the ends, so she ends up making the music with her throat, which to me sounds even more beautiful than what the flute has to offer. After a few moments of that, she resorts to practicing her tenacious four-toothed bite on the bamboo, leaving her parents with radiant smiles and truly happy laughs. After all, we like music that sounds just like us.
