Exposure and Fear
There is something intriguing about the feeling of exposure that weblogs can engender, both in those who blog and in those with whom the blogger interacts in everyday life. It can cause us to suddenly become self-conscious, and can lead to a closer examination of our thoughts and actions. As bloggers we ask ourselves questions like: ”Is this way of thinking correct?” “What might others think of this?” “How much of my own neuroses and conditional patterns will be revealed?” “Am I comfortable with that?” ”Is this what I really wish to portray?” “What will be the consequences of making such a statement?”. For those around bloggers: ”Am I comfortable interacting on a social or professional basis with a blogger?” “How much caution should I use when speaking to this person?” “Will he or she write about me?” “Can I trust him or her?”
Could the ease of personal webpublishing be changing the communicative patterns of our social reality and ultimately our concept of self and other? Could blogging be a tool for developing greater self awareness?
Then again, some people just blog. That’s it…just that.
